Cloud Migration

The 6 R's of Cloud Migration, Explained Simply

TiCON Cloud Team· AWS Advanced Tier Partner· May 20, 2026· 7 min read

Not every workload should move to the cloud the same way. The 6 R's framework helps you pick the right strategy for each application — balancing speed, cost, and long-term value.

The six strategies

  • Rehost (lift & shift): move as-is — fastest, lowest risk
  • Replatform: small optimizations like managed databases
  • Repurchase: switch to a SaaS alternative
  • Refactor: re-architect for cloud-native scale
  • Retain: keep on-prem for now
  • Retire: decommission what you no longer need

How to choose

Start with discovery: inventory every workload, map dependencies, and model TCO. Most estates end up with a mix — rehost the simple, replatform the valuable, refactor the strategic, and retire the dead weight.

TiCON's approach

We run a free one-week discovery, classify each workload to an R, and deliver a fixed quote and roadmap — with AWS MAP funding where it applies.
